Join Dream Girl Studio’s 6-week beginner sewing class for adults, designed to teach foundational skills while allowing students to complete small projects each week. The course will build confidence and prepare participants to take on more complex sewing projects in the future.

Beginner Sewing: 6-Week Course Outline

Course Goal:

By the end of this class, students will understand basic sewing techniques, learn how to use a sewing machine, and complete small projects to practice their skills.

Week 1: Introduction to Sewing & Machine Basics

Objective: Learn sewing terminology, machine setup, and basic stitches.

 Introduction & Overview: Welcome, class expectations, materials overview. Understanding the Sewing Machine: Parts of the machine. How to thread the machine & wind a bobbin. Tension settings & stitch types (straight, zigzag, backstitch). Practice Sewing on Scrap Fabric. Sewing straight lines. Pivoting at corners. Adjusting speed & control

Week 2: Fabric Cutting & Seam Allowances 

Objective: Learn how to properly cut fabric and understand seam allowances.

Intro to Fabric Types & Grainlines. How to Read a Simple Pattern. Measuring & Cutting Techniques (Using rotary cutters, fabric scissors, etc.) Seam Allowances & Pressing Techniques (Importance of ironing for professional finishes). Project: Sewing a Drawstring Bag. Cutting & sewing straight seams. Creating a casing for the drawstring. Turning & finishing edges

Week 3: Sewing Curves 

Objective: Build on sewing techniques by introducing curves and elastic.Review: Recap of Machine Basics & Straight Stitching

How to Sew Curves & Corners (Pivoting & easing fabric). Intro to Elastic & Casing Techniques. Project: Simple Elastic-Waist Skirt or Pajama Shorts. Cutting fabric using a basic pattern. 

Week 4: Learning Zippers & Decorative Stitching

Objective: Introduce zippers, topstitching, and decorative stitches.

Understanding Different Zippers & Their Uses. How to Sew a Basic Zipper (Using a zipper foot). Practice Decorative Stitching (Experimenting with machine decorative stitches). Project: Zippered Pouch or Cosmetic Bag. Sewing a zipper onto fabric. Finishing raw edges

Week 5: Decorative Stitching Apron

Objective: Apply learned skills to create a functional project.

Review of All Techniques Learned. Finish up apron. 

Week 6: Final Project….Personalized Totebag

Customizing a Tote Bag. Cutting fabric. Sewing handles & bag body. Adding optional details like pockets. 

Objective: Apply all sewing techniques learned to create a Customized Tote Bag. Cutting fabric. Sewing handles & bag body. Adding optional details like pockets.
