Join Dream Girl Studio’s 5-week beginner sewing class for kids ages 8-14, designed to teach foundational skills while allowing students to complete small projects each week. The course will build confidence and prepare participants to take on more complex sewing projects in the future. Workshops will be Interactive, hands-on, with simple explanations and fun projects

Beginner Sewing: 5-Week Course Outline

Course Goal:

By the end of this class, students will understand basic sewing techniques, learn how to use a sewing machine, and complete small projects to practice their skills.

Week 1: Introduction to Sewing & Machine Basics

Objective: Learn sewing terminology, machine setup, and basic stitches.

 Introduction & Overview: Welcome, class expectations, materials overview. Understanding the Sewing Machine: Parts of the machine. How to thread the machine & wind a bobbin. Tension settings & stitch types (straight, zigzag, backstitch). Practice Sewing on Scrap Fabric. Sewing straight lines. Pivoting at corners. Adjusting speed & control

Week 2: Fabric Cutting & Seam Allowances 

Objective: Learn how to properly cut fabric and understand seam allowances.

Intro to Fabric Types & Grainlines. How to Read a Simple Pattern. Measuring & Cutting Techniques (Using rotary cutters, fabric scissors, etc.) Seam Allowances & Pressing Techniques (Importance of ironing for professional finishes). Project: Sewing a shaped pillow. Cutting & sewing straight seams. Turning & finishing edges

Week 3: Sewing Curves & Installing a String w/casing

Objective: Build on sewing techniques by introducing curves and elastic.Review: Recap of Machine Basics & Straight Stitching

How to Sew Curves & Corners (Pivoting & easing fabric). Intro to Elastic & Casing Techniques. Project: Simple Drawstring Bag. Cutting fabric using a basic pattern. Sewing side seams. Creating a casing for a string.

Week 4: Learning to use Elastic

Objective: Sewing elastic casings, turning fabric inside out, and topstitching.

Teach how to sew a simple scrunchie with elastic inside. Fun fabric choices make it an exciting, wearable project. Can be a great opportunity to learn about fabric stretch and tension.

Week 5: Final Project…Personalized Tote Bag

Objective: Apply learned skills to create a functional project.

Review of All Techniques Learned. Customizing a Tote Bag. Cutting fabric. Sewing handles & bag body. Adding optional details (appliqués & patches)

Show & Tell: Students share their projects & reflect on their progress.
